An e-cigarette that allegedly exploded in an easyJet cabin earlier this month sparked widespread alarm on a journey to Amsterdam.
On May 18, at around 3 p.m., passengers first reported hearing a “popping sound” immediately after takeoff from Geneva. Later, video from inside the Airbus A320 jet showed smoke spewing from a hand luggage compartment.
In the horrifying video, a group of male guests try to seize the bag containing the e-cigarette and douse the flames with their bare hands as the locker glows orange.
The hot object is then removed by one man and set aside for others to stamp on.
Before the video concludes with the burned e-cig on the floor, screams can be heard as additional smoke starts to fill the cabin.
It appears like it lasts forever, but in reality, it only lasts for a few seconds, and everything was extinguished very quickly, a passenger told Radio Television Switzerland [RTS]. We become anxious because we think we might be stuck on a plane when there is this scent that reaches our throats.
The event would be the focus of a formal investigation, in accordance with the regulations, EasyJet told the same station.
E-cigarettes and a maximum of two spare batteries are permitted in hand luggage, but they cannot be put in the cargo hold of the aircraft, according to airline customer guidance.
