According to WA Health, the frightening rise in cases of vape poisoning in the State includes infants consuming liquid nicotine.
It is known that babies are finding uncapped vials and electronic smoking devices in their homes and sucking, ingesting, or breathing the contents.
This may send kids to the hospital and cause headaches, nausea, vomiting, heavy breathing, and other symptoms.
The shocking information is released at a time when more people in WA are seeking treatment for vape poisoning than ever before.
From just 18 incidents in 2020, the WA Poisons Information Centre reported 42 cases involving e-cigarette consumption in 2021.
The number from last year was higher than the number from 2019 (30 exposures were noted).
But the tendency was sickening more people than simply those who choose to light up electrically.
And even those in their 70s had reported to the poisons centre, despite the fact that vaping has grown in popularity among youths and young adults.
A representative for WA Health claimed that vapes contained dangerous substances and were not water.
Vegetable glycerine, propylene glycol, or glycerol are the major components of vapes. According to the representative, vapes can include the same dangerous chemicals that are present in cleaning supplies, nail polish remover, weed killer, and insect spray.
This demonstrates that there are numerous, serious risks associated with having access to vaping and e-cigarettes that are not specific to any one age group.
“We would strongly advise individuals to educate themselves about the risks associated with these goods, particularly with regard to children and teenagers.”
It comes after the Health and Education departments started a campaign to reduce e-cigarette use.
The “Do you realise what you’re vaping?” campaign reveals how using one vape device is equivalent to smoking 50 cigarettes, which has the same amount of nicotine.
Additionally, it clarifies how vapes that advertise being “nicotine-free” might actually contain a lot of nicotine.
According to WA Health, lung disease has also been connected to vaping.
In a crackdown on WA’s tobacco products control, the department recently issued a warning to 3000 businesses for supplying e-cigarette devices and nicotine ingredients for vaporizers.
