The passage of a new legislation governing vaping devices in Quebec is welcomed by the Canadian Cancer Society.
MONTREAL, The Government of Quebec and its Minister of Health, add are to be commended for enacting a number of regulatory steps to curb vaping among young Quebecers, according to the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS). On October 31st, 2023, the new regulation will come into force.
We must act immediately to address the epidemic of youth vaping in Quebec. Since 2013, there had been a quintupling of high school kids who vape, according to senior advocacy manager at CCS. We are happy to see that the government prioritises young health in the same way that we do. By using e-cigarettes, we hope to prevent a new generation from developing a nicotine addiction.
Four important measures are included in the new regulation: the prohibition of tastes in vaping goods, maximum nicotine concentrations, maximum cartridge sizes, and rules governing the design and colour of e-cigarettes and their packaging.
The CCS has a history of collaborating with the government on anti-smoking and anti-vaping campaigns, notably its I QUIT NOW cigarette cessation programme. Additionally, CCS participated in a special intervention group on vaping product regulation in 2019 that was established by the national director of public health for Quebec. The legislation that was implemented contains the recommendations made in the initiative’s final report, including the prohibition of flavours, which is the main reason that e-cigarettes are so popular among young people.
The fact that this new regulation marks a substantial advancement in safeguarding the health of young Quebec residents should be emphasised. To contribute to the development of a healthier society, we will continue to collaborate with relevant community stakeholders.
